Labrador Gets Mistaken For Giant Pug After Life-Saving Surgery

Bo the Labrador had to have part his nose removed after developing cancer

An adorable Labrador has been left looking like a giant pug after he had to have part of his nose removed in a life-saving op.

Ten-year-old Bo went under the knife in January after his owner Paddy Morral, 35, was told by vets the poor pooch had developed a cancerous tumour on his nose.

Part of his nose was removed in the surgery, but now, almost nine months on Bo's fur and whiskers have grown back and he is now mistaken for a massive pug when he's out and about with Paddy.

Paddy, from West Yorkshire, told the Sunday Express: "Our five other dogs acted a bit strangely around him at first, but they soon got used to his changed appearance.

"I actually thought he looked like a piranha fish, when there was no fur on his face, and people on the street used to be terrified of him. Now his fur has grown back, they just think he is some other kind of dog breed. "

Oh and in case you're wondering, yes, Paddy has heard the old joke about the dog with no nose.

He added: "I am very proud of Bo for coming through. He's been through a lot. I wouldn't be without him."

Ah, a very good, very brave boy. Let's hope Paddy is spoiling him with lots of treats.

One dog who is unlikely to be getting spoilt with lots of treats is Storm the Husky who appeared on This Morning with her owner Lucy Carrington.

Lucy was convinced her dog was a vegetarian, telling host Eamonn Holmes that the canine preferred veggies to meat, and, despite not being a vegetarian herself, she was happy to accommodate her dog's wishes.

Fair enough, right? If the dog opts for carrots over sausages that's up to her, surely? Except when it came to it and lovely Storm was presented with a bowl of vegetables alongside a bowl of meat, he went she went straight for the meat. Awkward, eh?

As the pooch ploughed straight into the meat, Lucy said: "Oh you little...I didn't swear. In fairness the weather has cooled down quite dramatically."

Meanwhile a vet on the show explained that dogs are omnivores, so should be given meat and veggies in their diet.

"She seemed to perk up, be a lot happier. She really took to it," said Lucy after the test. "If this is what she wants then obviously I'm going to adapt accordingly." Good to hear.

History

As a working dog breed, the Giant Schnauzer, known also as the Riesenschnauzer, hails from Germany.

It is believed that the first Giant Schnauzers emerged in Bavaria in the 17th century already. It is the largest of the 3 Schnauzer dogs Miniature, Standard and Giant. There are quite a few breeds which have been used in its development Bouvier des Flandres, Great Dane and the German Pinscher among other.

The dog was bred to work on farms and also used as a military dog during the World Wars.

The Labrador Retriever has its origin from Newfoundland which is an island.Dorset Eskimos are the people who settled down first in Newfoundland. Newfoundland was discovered in 1494 by the Bristol traders from England. The people in the Newfoundland used Lab to help them during fishing.They were recognized as a kennel club breed in England.

The Lab has its special talents in fishing, it nicely holds the fish in its mouth and swims well to bring it to the fisherman who was its master. They are also used to hunt game birds and waterfowl.

Description

With a thick, medium length double coat to protect him from the weather, the Giant Schnauzers coat is essentially wiry and hard and in solid black or in a greyish salt and pepper color.

The dogs have always traditionally had their ears and tails docked at the 2nd or 3rd joint to set them apart in looks, but these days both the ears and tail are left.

The tail is always held high. He has dark eyes. Like all Schnauzers, they have that distinct beard and eyebrows. The dog is large and well built and stands at 60 to 70cm in height and weighs anything between 25 and 48kg.

Temperament:

Intelligent, strong willed and energetic, the Giant Schnauzer is actually a quiet dog who doesnt respond too well to strangers, being reserved around them.

He has a natural guarding and territorial instinct. When he is trained and socialized he makes a wonderful pet, responding well to a firm, consistent owner.

A healthy Schnauzer can reach 10 12 years of age, but even so, they are a dog breed prone to high rates of hip- and elbow dysplasia, hereditary eye disease and thyroid disease.

Blood-clotting diseases and epilepsy are also concerns with Giant Schnauzers as well as bloat. As with all deep-chested breeds, Giant Schnauzers are more at risk with this gastrointestinal syndrome known as bloat and which can be life threatening.

For good health, Lab should be fed by a diet controlled food. Because overfeeding will lead to overweight of the dog as it causes weakness of bones.
